ST. LOUIS -- Julius Randle had 19 points and 15 rebounds, Aaron Harrison finished with 18 points and No. 8 seed Kentucky held on to beat Kansas State 56-49 on Friday night to earn a date with top-seeded Wichita State in the NCAA tournament. The preseason No. 1, Kentucky (25-10) is finally starting to live up to the expectations that came with its heralded recruiting class. John Caliparis bunch nearly knocked of Florida in the SEC title game last week and seemed to carry that momentum right into the Scottrade Center. Now, the question is whether it will continue on Sunday. The Shockers, on the top line of the Midwest Region, rolled over Cal Poly to improve to 35-0. Marcus Foster had 15 points, Shane Southwell scored 11 and Thomas Gipson finished with 10 for Kansas State (20-13), which started in a 1-0 hole after a technical for a dunk in pregame warm-ups. The No. 9 seed then struggled to hit from the perimeter against Kentuckys tall lineup. Kansas State was just 5 of 21 from 3-point range. Foster was 1 of 7. The victory is the start of what Kentucky hopes is an NCAA tournament of validation. The team stocked with highly recruited freshmen has been criticized for failing to live up to lofty expectations, losing several times to overmatched and undermanned opponents. Of course, all of that becomes moot when the NCAA tournament begins. Kentucky has won 21 of its last 22 games to open the dance, when the lights are brightest and the games mean the most. Meanwhile, Kansas State was in trouble even before its tournament began. Sophomore walk-on Brian Rohleder, who played only 31 minutes all season, earned a technical foul for that pre-game dunk. NCAA rules prohibit dunking with less than 20 minutes until tip, and Rohleders dunk came with 19:58 showing on the clock. Andrew Harrison made one of two free throws while fans from both schools showered the officials with derision, and Kentucky led 1-0 when the game finally started. The SEC tournament runner-up built on its advantage through the opening minutes, the Harrison twins each knocking down a series of outside shots. Kentucky pushed the lead to 29-17 with 2:23 to go on Randles basket, but Kansas State answered with six straight points to end the half. Bruce Webers team trimmed the lead to 35-33, only for Kentucky to regain control when Southwell was hit with a technical for arguing a no-call on a drive to the basket. Kentucky stretched its lead to 44-36 midway through the second half, and whenever its rival Wildcats threatened to get closer, Randle was there to answer the call. The bruising forward stuck back a miss to make it 46-38 with 8:02 remaining, converted a three-point play a few minutes later, and then scored again at the rim for a 51-40 advantage. Kansas State closed to 55-49 on Fosters off-balance 3-pointer with 24 seconds to go. But a team that replaced most of its key players from a season ago and defied expectations all year eventually ran out of time on its comeback bid. Martin Brodeur Jersey . Chubbs phenomenal performance, along with a defense that came up with three interceptions, enabled the Bulldogs (10-3) to overcome an injury to quarterback Hutson Mason and reach double-digit victories for the third time in four years. The standout freshmans yardage total was the second-highest single-game effort in Georgia history, and it came against a Cardinals defense that came in ranked third in FBS against the run. He showed everybody in the country again that hes a pretty talented young man, Georgia head coach Mark Richt said of Chubb. Im real proud of Nick. Mason completed 10-of-15 passes for 149 yards and a touchdown to Chris Conley prior to exiting near the end of the half with an undisclosed injury. Conley finished with 80 yards on four catches, but clearly played a supporting role on a night where Chubb was the unquestioned star. Kyle Bolin threw for 300 yards and a touchdown on 20-of-40 passing for Louisville (9-4), but was picked off twice. DeVante Parker amassed 120 yards on eight receptions in the loss, with Brandon Radcliff tallying 89 rushing yards and a touchdown on 19 attempts. We got beat by a very good football team, said Louisville head coach Bobby Petrino. Offensively we never really got any consistency and werent able to get into a rhythm. Mason was on his way to a banner night as well prior to departing, with the fifth-year senior stepping up big with Louisville bottling up the Bulldogs potent ground game for much of the first half. He hit on four straight throws, including a 20-yard strike to Michael Bennett, early in the second quarter to position Marshall Morgan for a 41-yard field goal that snapped a 7-7 tie. Mason then converted a pair of third downs on Georgias next drive, finding Sony Michel on a screen for a 32-yard gain and later scrambling for six yards on a 3rd-and-4. Chubb took a handoff on the next play and bounced off several defenders en route to a 31-yard touchdown that extended the lead to 10 points with 6:40 left in the first half. That kid is good at football, Bulldogs cornerback Damian Swann said of Chubb. Hes going to break a lot of records in his Georgia career. Louisvilles Reggie Bonnafon was intercepted on the ensuing possession by Dominick Sanders, who zig-zagged 40 yards to the Cardinals 9 to set up Morgans 22-yard field goal for a 20-7 advantage. Georgias defense made the lead hold up byy yielding just one sustained possession in a second half in which Chubb took over.dddddddddddd With the Bulldogs pinned down on their own 3-yard line midway through the third quarter, the young back burst up the middle and broke loose from the Louisville secondary before finally being brought down on the Cardinals 15. Two plays after the 82-yard rush, Michel reached the end zone on a 2-yard carry that put Louisville in a 27-7 hole. The Cardinals were able to respond courtesy of Parker, who caught four balls for 70 yards on the following series he highlighted with a determined 21-yard catch-and-run to convert a 3rd-and-20. Radcliff powered in from six yards away on the next snap to give Louisville some life with 1:48 left in the third quarter. Louisville then stopped the Bulldogs on downs to get the ball back, but Swann intercepted Bolins deep pass on the next play. The turnover led to Morgan knocking through a 41-yard field goal with 5:20 left. Brice Ramsey, who took over for Mason, had a 14-yard connection with Kenneth Towns on third down to place Georgia in range for the kick. Our young quarterbacks learned that when you call plays and somebodys covered, youve got to throw the ball away, Petrino said. Chubb finished off his record-setting night with a 30-yard scamper he backed up with a 8-yard touchdown with just over two minutes to go. Georgia marched 90 yards in eight plays on the games opening drive, which was kept alive by a personal foul penalty on Louisville that negated Masons third-down incompletion. The Bulldogs capitalized shortly afterward when Mason hit a wide-open Conley for a 44-yard touchdown on play action. The Cardinals answered with a 9-play, 84-yard sequence capped by Gerald Christians one-handed 11-yard touchdown grab, but failed to cross midfield over the remainder of the half. Game Notes Chubbs 266 yards was eclipsed only by Herschel Walkers 280 against Vanderbilt in 1980 for the highest single-game total in Georgia history, and shattered the Bulldogs previous bowl record of 163 by Garrison Hearst in the 1993 Citrus ...
